![]() I might make less early on, but as times goes on, I probably stand to make money.Ĭlick to expand.Yeah, I'm not sure what they're on about, to be honest? See, best case scenario for T239 is 4N- on which it is a ridiculously tiny, truly miniscule chip with an awful lot of stuff stuffed into that tiny package. I'm probably inclined to just take that business. If Nintendo says they want it at $60/part but guarantee a product order of 30+ million over 2 years or else they will go shopping for other suppliers. Like lets just say for example I'm the LCD for the current Switch and we're negotiating pricing terms for the Switch 2 LCD. Nintendo is also likely to get favorable chip deals because the OG Switch sold 140+ million (well is going to) so as a parts supplier, like I'm not going to want to lose Nintendo's business, even if they say "we want an extremely aggressive price on component XYZ early on" because I know there's a good chance they will still ordering tens of millions of that component years down the line. The Steam Deck is being sold around cost apparently at $399.99 from launch, but that was in early 2022, Switch 2 will be late 2024. I don't think chip prices linearly scale like that. I doubt they could have made 2GB work, but it's not impossible 4GB is likely, and if Sony could cut even more out of the OS to get that lower, it would be a substantial cost savings. ![]() It needs to run the OS and hold a single 1080p image in the framebuffer. My bet is those people buying this to hack are going to be disappointed by the amount of RAM. Everybody buying this as an emulator box is making Sony money. By picking up a cheap overengineered SOC, they saved money twice.Īnd since the device doesn't have games of its own to pirate, any kind of jailbreaking doesn't represent a risk to Sony. And by reusing the OS and the existing app, they saved money as well. I imagine they were sitting in a warehouse, and were the cheapest chip on the market that could run Android and the RemotePlay app at decent performance. It's on a Samsung node that no longer exists, so they can't make more of them. I expect the focus to be on the next set of evergreens, possibly ensuring that they are appropriately downgraded on the base Switch.Ĭlick to expand. The 662 was an entry level chip in the entry level series when it released nearly 4 years ago. I think Nintendo knows that Splatoon and Pokemon are highly iterative franchises built on giving you "more of that thing you like." Patching these games will make it somewhat harder to sell sequels.Īll this said, I expect that the treatment of evergreens will be mostly minimal, and mostly in the launch period. I think Nintendo knows that it will be nearly impossible for Mario Kart NeXt or Smash: Harder to match their predecessors in content, especially at launch. I think, all things considered, Nintendo would like to give us sequels to their once-per-generation evergreens, especially considering the fact that a majority of Switch NG owners will have already bought these games, and BC will mean that these evergreens are starting to die. ![]() I think they would prefer that to giving us patches for games we already own, and hoping that drives hardware sales. I think, all things considered, Nintendo would like to be selling us full price software, at the cadence they've maintained for most of the Switch generation, and let that new software drive hardware sales. PS5 could simply apply whatever enhancements the PS4 Pro got, and enhancements developed for PS5 could be readily tweaked for PS4 Pro while you were in there, increasing the market those enhancements would have. I would also say that "enhancements" to base games on other platforms was almost definitely a side effect of having Pro consoles. It's not required for a "next gen" system, and we should work to shake off those old expectations. ![]() Free enhancements to base games is the only way that that Pro console works. I would gently point out to people that we've been speculating on this hardware back when we thought Nintendo was developing a Pro. But personally, I'm not playing any evergreens, so I don't have a dog in that fight. ![]()
